Andrew joined the firm in July 2018 as a paralegal in the corporate and commercial team.  Prior to joining the firm, Andrew gained two years’ experience as a paralegal in Guernsey, assisting with a broad range of banking and corporate finance, corporate and commercial, regulatory and investment fund matters.

Christian Evans

Head of Private Client

Christian is a Solicitor who specialises in Wills, Probate, Lasting Power of Attorneys, Court of Protection, Trusts, Succession Planning and advising farmers and landowners on tax matters. Having worked in the Cotswolds, Bath, Bristol and surrounding suburbs of Bristol, Christian has developed a breadth of knowledge over the years. Christian is very client oriented and strives to make sure that the client understands and is comfortable in the nature of the work undertaken. Christian is currently an affiliate member of STEP.

Senior Associate – Property

Claire joined MS Rubric in January 2019 and specialises in both Commercial and Residential Property matters. With over 21 years’ experience, Claire brings an in-depth legal knowledge to all aspects of Commercial Property transactions, including advising Landlords and Tenants on grant of new commercial leases, lease assignments, licences to assign, licences to underlet or for alterations, deeds of variation, business tenancies and option agreements over land. Claire also acts for buyers and sellers in all types of residential property transactions, including high value, complex and rural transactions.

Dawn Watling

Senior Associate Solicitor – Private Client

Dawn is a Senior Associate in the Private Client team, having joined MS Rubric in 2018. She trained and qualified with Wilsons Solicitors in Salisbury and then moved to a Bristol law firm. Dawn deals with all private client work including Wills, Trusts, Probate and Estate Administration both for individuals and charity clients and advises on inheritance tax issues where necessary.

She also is experienced in mental capacity matters dealing with Enduring and Last Powers of Attorney, and applications to the Court of Protection for Deputyships and Statutory Wills.

Dawn is a member of The Society of Trust and Estate Practitioners (STEP).

Emma joined the firm in October 2018 as a paralegal and assists in corporate, commercial and employment matters. Before joining the firm Emma worked in the head office of an HR franchise and was responsible for their international expansions. Emma previously achieved a distinction in her Legal Practice Course.

Hayley is a Paralegal assisting in corporate, property and employment matters. Before joining the firm she worked as a legal assistant for the commercial property team in a Bristol law firm. Hayley is currently studying the Legal Practice Course at the University of the West of England.

James Howell

Partner – Head of Corporate and Commercial

James handles commercial and employment matters. His commercial work includes advising on the transfer of shares and businesses, preparing shareholder, LLP and partnership agreements and drafting commercial contracts. His employment work involves advising on dismissal, disciplinary and grievance matters, redundancy and business reorganisations (including TUPE) and employment tribunal claims. James has over 10 years’ experience and was previously a partner in a Bristol law firm.

Joanna Westmacott

Head of Property Department and Notary Public

Joanna qualified as a solicitor after training in Lincoln’s Inn, and subsequently became a senior lecturer in property law. Joanna returned to private practice as a commercial property solicitor, and ultimately ran her own law firm. Joanna has extensive experience of property matters, for commercial and private clients, including developments, business sales, acquisitions and complex property issues. She has a friendly, straightforward and effective approach.

Joanna is also a Notary Public, having been awarded a post-graduate diploma in Notarial Practice from Cambridge University in 2007.

Melanie Davies

Head of Employment

Melanie is a specialist employment and HR solicitor with over 10 years’ experience. Having worked as a business owner for over 20 years, she understands the need to balance commercial needs against regulation and compliance. Melanie undertakes all employment matters but has a particular interest in discipline and grievance issues, sickness absence management, litigation (including advocacy), discrimination, harassment and dismissals. Melanie is currently studying a Masters in HR Management to support her legal advice with a focus on performance management.

Nayo Kirkpatrick

Associate – Employment

Nayo qualified as a solicitor in 2012 and has a wide range of experience in employment law, including employment related disputes. He prides himself on his ability to take a balanced and strategic approach to the work he undertakes and the advice he gives to his clients. A key member of our employment team, Nayo routinely advises clients on internal grievance and disciplinary issues, negotiating employee departures and settlement agreements, as well as providing a full range of day-to-day HR support services to commercial clients. He has a particular interest in the employment aspects of corporate transactions.
